Kisimul Castle

This has to be one of the most fun castles to approach anywhere in the world. To reach it requires a minute-long boat ride from the pier in Castlebay, and I have never felt anything quite like the feeling of coming right up to a castle’s gates by water. It lends a true sense of adventure. Kisimul has been the seat of the MacNeils of Barra for over 600 years, and was a stronghold of the Lordship of the Isles. The Norse left their mark on Barra with bloody raids, and thereafter the castle was built. In this part of Scotland the birlinn ships were the key to power, and places like Kisimul castle functioned as staging points.
