Aberdour Castle

Aberdour Castle is one of the oldest fortified homes in Scotland, first built up by the Norman de Mortimers. Following the Battle of Bannockburn Robert the Bruce granted the castle to Thomas Randolph, and the castle would go on to play host to Murrays, Douglases, and eventually pigs before its rescue and transfer to state care in the 1920s. With a terraced garden capable of growing exotic fruits, Aberdour was only briefly a place of martial strength. For most of its existence it has been a fortified yet comfortable home. I explored Aberdour with the Registers of Scotland for their #RoS400 campaign, so if you can’t visit for yourself the next best thing is to watch the quick video we madeĀ here.
