Yester Castle

Yester Castle is surely one of Scotland’s most memorable and hair-raising castles. Concealed in the woods of the Yester Estate in East Lothian, it dates to the mid-13th century. Its most famous feature is the Goblin Ha’ (Hall), built by Sir Hugo de Giffard who was known as “The Wizard of Yester”. He supposedly enlisted an army of goblins to build his great hall, and while that may be in doubt the creepiness of going inside sure isn’t. You have to charge into a dark, hidden passageway that feels straight out of the Blair Witch to reach the Goblin Ha’ itself, a cavernous vaulted chamber with another stair descending ominously into darkness. I went in all the way, but you can bet I was moving a little quicker than usual on my way out!
