Loch Doon Castle

Loch Doon Castle in the Galloway Forest Park is an oddity – built in the late 1200s by Robert the Bruce or his father, it’s a polygonal castle that went back and forth between Scots and English during the Wars of Independence. It once stood on an island in Loch Doon, but when the water levels were raised the island faced inundation and so the castle was moved, stone by stone, to higher ground on the shore. Can you imagine the process of putting it back together? Eat your heart out, Ikea!
